Using the simple technique of applying multiple rubber stamped images to candles, it is possible to turn a plain white candle into a dramatic decoration. As the candle burns, the flame shines through the bright red flower giving it an almost 'stained glass' effect. The round candle shows off the stamped images well. The project is easy to adapt by varying the stamps used, the colors and the type of candle.
Difficulty: Average
Time Required: An Afternoon

Here's How:

  1. First pick your rubber stamp. The stamps that work particularly well with this project are stamps that have an outline that gives large clear area as this will be colored in and helps give the bold finished effect. Flowers work particularly well as they can be colored in dramatic shades, however hearts, animals, stars or other shapes would work equally well.

The stamp in the picture came from Crafty Individuals no: CI - 115.
  2. Measure the circumference (the measurement around the girth of the candle) of the candle and measure the width of the stamped image. Work out how many images will fit on the stamp. The gap between the stamped images will depend on the size of the candle and stamp used.
  3. Stamp the required number of images onto white tissue paper (stamp a couple of extra images in case any get damaged).
  4. When the stamped images are dry color them in with a marker pen. Use a bold color for maximum effect.
  5. Gently mark on the candle where the images are to go. These can be temporarily be held in place with a dab of glue. Fix the images to the candle following this How To Put Rubber Stamped Images on Candles guide.
  6. Enjoy!

Note: Do not leave burning candles unattended.

Tips:

  1. Marker pens give a bold and vibrant color that works well with this project, different effects could be achieved with chalks or colored tissue papers.
  2. To ensure that the stamped images are correctly aligned, gently 'score' along the candle to give guidelines to line the images against.
  3. Rub any candle drips or other markings with the back of a spoon to give smooth surface.
  4. For best effect light this candle in dark surroundings to allow the colors to shine through.
