Rubber stamping envelopes is the perfect complement to a handmade greeting card. The humble envelope can be transformed from a simple card container into a beautiful creation by the addition of a few rubber stamps. There are many different ways that an envelope can be decorated ranging from a single well placed stamp, through to an all over design created from a montage of stamps. Envelopes present a great stamping opportunity and the next time you send a hand stamped card, don't forget to make your mark on the envelope too!
Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: Quick

Here's How:

  1. Before starting to stamp the envelope a design needs to be decided. There are some important features to remember when planning to rubber stamp envelopes:
    • Ensure that there is a clear space for the address and stamp if the envelopes are to go through the post
    • Fancy finishes might not be practical for envelopes - glitter or embellishments, for instance, might get knocked loose
    • Hand delivered envelopes can be more flamboyant in design
    • To keep a space clear for the address and stamp, cut a piece of paper to size and use as a mask. The rubber stamping technique of masking is simple to do and is the ideal way to keep a space clear when stamping envelopes.
    • Stamp over the envelopes as required. Keep the envelope flap closed while stamping the back as this will give a seamless stamped design.
    • If you want to take the 'handmade' theme one step further, how about making envelopes! Take a look at some of the projects in our envelopes template library for inspiration.

Tips:

  1. Make sure that plenty of space is left for the address and that the address can be clearly read.
  2. Do not use glitter or other embellishments when decorating envelopes for putting through the mail.
  3. Recycle used envelopes by decorating them with stamps.
  4. Hand stamped and decorated envelopes are ideal for keeping important pieces of paper, photos, keepsakes and other small items safe and make a nice change from boring commodity envelopes.
