Washi Tape

Kate Pullen
Washi tape (decorative Japanese masking tape) is a useful addition to any rubber stamper's or paper crafter's work box. Washi tape shares many similarities with masking tape. However while masking tape is used primarily as a practical tool to hold an item in place or to act as a mask, washi tape is highly decorative and is used to make embellishments and adornments on projects. What is Washi Tape

Washi tape originated in Japan and is a decorative tape made out of washi paper. The tape is slightly transparent, can be torn by hand and has a repeat decorative patten on the surface. This makes it ideal for using in a variety of projects. Washi tape can be purchased from craft stores. There is also a tremendous selection available to buy online - Compare Prices. Single packs as well as packs containing a set of complementary colored and pattered rolls of washi tape are available. In addition to 'real' washi tape, you can also find digital versions available and these are great for digital crafting projects. How to Use Washi Tape

Washi tape can be used in a variety of ways to add color and pattern to your rubber stamping projects. Bright colorful borders are easy to create with washi tape. However, it can also be used to add other embellishments and adornments. A small piece of washi tape can be used to adhere a piece of paper with a special message, for instance, to a handmade card or scrapbook page. Washi tape will also make an attractive way to close a gift bag or gift box. Use a printable gift box template to make a gift box or gift bag from paper or card stock. Add a rubber stamp image or two and some washi tape as a closure for a quick way to make attractive handmade gift packaging. Washi tape is easily removable and doesn't leave a sticky residue. Therefore washi tape is particularly well suited to adding temporary decorations onto the surface of items.

Tips for Using Washi Tape

Here are some tips for using washi tape in your rubber stamping and paper craft projects;
  • Washi tape normally has a repeating decorative pattern on the surface therefore it is straightforward to match up designs. However it works well in more organic designs too and the torn edges can add additional decorative interest to your project.
  • Washi tape is available in many different designs and color schemes. When you are starting, buy rolls of tapes in complementary colors and designs so you can mix and match.
  • Experiment with stamping on washy tape. A permanent ink will be best suited to stamping on the surface of washi tape. A pigment ink may also be used depending on the surface of the washi tape you are using, however this will require heat embossing to seal the surface.
Washi tape is a versatile and fun product and works well with many rubber stamping projects.
