Use by dates

After finding an old jar full of cookie mix in my daughters flat that she was about to use, I no always include a use-by date and make a note of the date that I packed the gift. I take the use by information from the ingredients used and use the date that is soonest. Dried ingredients last for ever - but it is aways best to be on the safe side.

Tell a story

When I make a gift in a jar using a favorite cookie recipe, I always add a few words about the recipe, like when I first found it, where we first cooked it, whether it is a family favorite or a local specialty. I think that this helps to personalize the gift.

Curry Mix

This is interesting! I've been making curry mixes as presents for a few years however I didn't know that this type of gift had its own name! When I make curry mixes I layer the ingredients. As there are lots of different herbs and spices it looks very attractive. My tip for making a cury mix to give as a gift is to put the powdered spices at the bottom of the jar as they are used last. I crush large seeds, like coriander and put these in the middle and make sure that mustard seed and cumin are at the top as they are used first. I always include a recipe and a small envelope containing extra chillies. These always go down well with friends and family.
