Curing - Polymer Clay

By , About.com Guide

See More About:
Definition: Curing is the words that is used to describe the hardening process of polymer clay. This typically means heating or baking the polymer clay until it is hardened. At this stage the clay can no longer by molded or formed, although some brands of polymer clay do have a degree of flexibility after curing.

Different brands of polymer clays cure at different heats, therefore it is important to check the specific instructions of a brand before curing it. Polymer clays can be cured within the temperature range of most domestic ovens. While many polymer clay artists have an oven that is dedicated to clay use, it is perfectly safe to use the normal household oven to bake the clay as long as normal health and safety procedures are in place. Refer to the manufacturers instructions for more specific information.

Tips for Curing Polymer Clay

Here are some tips for curing polymer clay:
  • Check the temperature of the oven using a oven thermometer. Many ovens heat over or under the set temperature.
  • Avoid burning polymer clay. This will darken the clay as well as giving off nasty fumes.
  • Turn items over half way through to give an even finish.
  • Use clay dedicated utensils such as baking trays or boards.
  • Polymer clay can be fired many times, therefore it is possible to make a basic shape and keep adding to it to build up a more complex design.
