What are Photo Stamps?

By , About.com Guide

Definition: Photo stamps are rubber stamps that contain very fine detail and, when stamped, create an image that is similar to a photograph. These stamps often feature vintage photographs of people. Photo stamps are particularly popular with art stampers and people interested in altered art projects. Photo stamps contain a lot of fine details and are typically made from rubber instead of clear polymer. Many photo stamps are unmounted.

Using Photo Stamps

Photo stamps can be used in the same way as traditional stamps, however many stampers find that using an ink that gives fine detail, such as VersaFine, help. Photo stamps also give the clearest images when stamped onto a glossy surface. Stampers often develop their own technique for using photo stamps, and many get success from placing the paper onto the stamp rather than stamping the stamp onto the paper. Getting good stamped images from photo stamps can take a little time and practice.
