Make glow in the dark ornaments and decorations for Christmas and the holidays. It is easy to make your own special glow in the dark ornaments and decorations using glow in the dark polymer clay and rubber stamps. Glow in the dark polymer clay looks just like any other polymer clay until it is dark when it takes on a luminous shine. Glow in the dark polymer clay gradually loses its glow, however it can easily be 'recharged' by placing it in front of a strong light for a while. Different colored glow in the dark polymer clay is available, however the one with the strongest glow is the white or uncolored version.
Glow in the dark polymer clay is easy to use. It can be used in the same way as any other polymer clay. The best type of stamp to use to make festive ornaments and decorations is a stamp with a strong image which can be stamped in a single color. Use a permanent ink such as StazOn as this will not smudge or smear.
Supplies Required
- Glow in the dark polymer clay
- Craft rolling pin (or pasta maker) and sharp knife
- Rubber stamps and inks
- Ribbon, cord or wire to hang the ornaments
Instructions
- Condition the polymer clay (see How to Condition Polymer Clay for more information)
- Roll the polymer clay into a sheet of about 1/4" thick
- Cut shapes from the polymer clay to make pendants and earrings (you could use cookie cutters to cut shapes of a consistent size)
- Pierce a hole so that the shapes can be attached to an ornament hanger
- Bake the polymer clay according to the manufacturer's instructions
- When the clay is cool, stamp an image
- Attach wire, ribbon or an ornament hanger to finish
Ideas for Finishing the Ornament
The ornament is finished and ready to hang. However you can add some more decoration to it to give it festive flair. Try running a row of glitter glue around the outside of the ornament, this will give added sparkle to the ornament. Another way to add interest is to add beads to the ornament. Beads can be hung from the ornament hanger or, if you make a second hole at the bottom before baking the clay, you can add a beaded tassel from the bottom of the ornament.
