Download and Save Digital Stamps

By , About.com Guide

Digital stamps are delivered and downloaded in different ways depending on the digital stamp company. Free digital stamps will usually be offered for download directly from the digital stamp company's website, but paid for stamps maybe offered for delivery in different ways. For a step by step guide to buying a digital stamp from an Etsy store see /od/digitalstamps/ss/How to Buy a Digital Stamp

Paying for Digital Stamps

You won't be able to get your stamps until you've actually paid for them and this is usually carried out through a recognized payment service provider. A lot of sites are now using PayPal for this service as this offers a relatively cheap and easy way for small digital stamp producers to sell their designs.

Whichever service is used to take your payment, the one important piece of advice you should always keep in mind is to check that the page you enter your card details into is using an encrypted connection. You can do this simply by checking the address bar of your web browser and ensuring that the address of the page you're on starts with the prefix "https://". Web addresses normally start with "http://" and the extra "s" signifies that the page is using a secure connection.

Receiving Your Digital Stamp

After you've made your payment, there are several possible ways that you'll receive your digital stamp. Very often, you will automatically be taken to a page from which you can download your digital stamp immediately. Email is another service that is often used. The digital stamp is delivered as an attachment to an email. The digital stamp will often be contained within a zip file.

In some cases, rather than emailing you the stamp, you will be emailed a link to a web page from where you can download your digital. You should check for any time limits that affect how long the download link will be available to you. Some sites only allow their customers a day or two in which to download digital stamps after they have been purchased or will only allow the stamps to be downloaded a certain number of times.

Downloading Digital Stamps

Download links can function in a couple of ways however they are both quite straightforward:

The first type, when clicked, open a window on your PC asking if you want so open or save the file. You'll always want to choose 'save' and this will open a window in which you can navigate to the folder on your PC where you want to save your stamp.

The second method is used by some sites that offer their digital stamps by displaying the stamp in a web page and inviting you to right-click and save the image. Just move your cursor on top of the image and click and hold the right mouse button of your mouse (if you're using an older model Apple Mac with a one button mouse, you need to hold down the Ctrl button while clicking the mouse button) and you'll see a 'context' menu appear next to the cursor. The required option that you need to click will be labeled "Save Image As...". or similar, depending on the web browser that you're using. That will then open a window from which you can navigate to the folder on your computer where you want to save the downloaded digital stamp.

Archiving Digital Stamps

A good habit to get into is to save all of your stamps into an archive as soon as you download them and only ever work on copies of files from this archive. You should also look at using a method of backing up newly downloaded stamps immediately, perhaps onto a CD, though a USB pen drive or external hard drive maybe a more convenient method. This means that your original files will always be protected and can be used and reused over and over again, and your digital stamps will never be at risk from loss should you experience a problem with your computer.
