The benefit of rubber stamping cut out shapes for handmade cards is that a wide variety of rubber stamped images can be used and this saves the need to buy special stamps for every occasion. To illustrate this, the tie in the picture was stamped with a Christmas snowflake stamp - the dark inks and way the stamp has been used has disguised its original purpose!

A tie is ideal for decorating a card for a man. This is a simple cut out shape, however if you are up for a bit of paper folding then a great origami tie project could make an interesting challenge!
Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: Quick

Here's How:

  1. Draw and cut out a tie shape from plain paper or cardstock. A template for a tie can be found on this sheet of printables. Cutting a separate shape for the 'knot' will create a slightly more three dimensional effect.
  2. Stamp the tie shape as required. The tie in the image has been stamped with different colored inks, however heat embossing and coloring with chalks, inks or paints would work equally well.
  3. Cut or tear the background paper to shape and assemble the card. The background paper in the photograph has torn edges which have been emphasized with a brush of ink. A piece of newspaper was crumpled and then dabbed with an ink pad to create the background in the photograph.

Tips:

  1. Add a tiny brad or stick on jewel to make a 'tie pin'.
  2. Create stripes on the tie by stamping over strips of masking tape.
  3. Make a few extra ties and keep to one side for a quick and easy way to make a last minute card for a man!
  4. This is also a great project for youngsters and a good way to introduce them to using rubber stamps.
  5. Thicker cardstock will give a deeper, more three dimensional image.

What You Need:

  • Tie template
  • Rubber stamps, inks, embossing powders as required
  • Card blank
  • Backing paper
  • Glue
